Level 1 - Shotgun Marksmanship & Handling

Spring 2012 - Saturday, Apr. 7th.

Call for further Information - Cedar Ridge Range (830) 980-4424.  Law Enforcement or Private Groups meeting minimum student requirements may call to arrange Private Scheduling for their convenience.

The Level 1 class will be conducted by Instructor Greg Ferris.    The class will be approximately 5 hours in duration (9 am until 2 pm) with an on-site meal break.  These classes are "not" beginner level classes, you must at least know basic safety and handling procedures.  Prospective students may be required to demonstrate a basic ability to safely handle and shoot their rifle prior to acceptance into the class.  Students may also be required to present valid ID and demonstrate a clear criminal history.

Primary requirements are: 1) enthusiasm, 2) a willingness to experiment and 3) a willingness to learn new skills and overcome challenges.

Students will provide their own quality 12ga/20ga Pump or Semi-Auto Style Shotgun with 5 shot minimum capacity. Provision will be made also to bring 250+ rounds of factory ammunition (no reloads or steel pellets). Student will need 15 rounds of Slug ammo and 15 rounds of either 00 buck, 0 buck or #4 buck ammo.  Use of "reduced recoil" loads would be preferable but not required, it will be your shoulder.  The remaining ammo should be a birdshot shell loaded with pellets of size #9, 8 or 7 1/2.   If in doubt as to suitability of firearm or ammo please inquire prior to class.

Also required is suitable hearing and eye protection.  Firearms may have any brand of laser or heads up system (red dot, trijcon, etc.), if desired, but iron sighting system must be present and initially useable.  Students should feel free to have various useful accessories mounted on their firearms (such as: specialty stocks, rail forearms, slings, grips, comps, slings, loaders etc.) just don't get carried away as Practicality is the benchmark.  Trigger release weights of less than 3# pull will not be allowed.   Options to consider are a carrying case, gear/ammo bag, elbow and knee pads, ground mat, cleaning kit with quality bore rod and any tools for maintenance and lubricants.

All students should plan to bring sufficient food and beverages (especially water) to sustain them for on-site meal and breaks. Pen/pencil and paper should be considered for note taking.

This class will teach the "how" of effectively employing deadly force with a shotgun by application of correct handling and marksmanship techniques.  Course format will include, but not be limited to, training in the various styles of position shooting and tactical/stress skills.  There will be in-depth discussions, experimentation in and practice of:  shotgun marksmanship, managing psychological and physical influences on marksmanship during deadly force incidents,  evaluation of factors in choosing appropriate firearm and ammunition, proper shotgun handling techniques and mental mind set training.

Six (6) student minimum is required per class date.  Enrollment is based on first paid (in full) is first served.  Enrollment fee of $75.00/class is NON-REFUNDABLE.  (Allowance to attend a future class may be arranged if cancellation made in time to fill vacated slot.)
